Prepared Today, Ready for Tomorrow

Posted March 6, 2026
Preparedness isn’t about living in fear or expecting the worst. It’s about taking practical steps today that can help you and your family respond with greater confidence when life takes an unexpected turn.
Emergencies can happen in many forms—a severe storm, power outage, evacuation, temporary water disruption, unexpected illness, or another situation that interrupts everyday routines. While we cannot predict every circumstance, we can make thoughtful preparations that help us respond rather than panic.
Start With the Essentials
Emergency preparedness doesn’t have to happen all at once. Begin with the basics your household would need if normal services were temporarily unavailable.
Consider food and water, medications, first-aid supplies, flashlights and emergency lighting, backup power, important documents, hygiene supplies, communication tools, and other necessities specific to your household.
Build gradually. A few intentional purchases or preparations at a time can eventually create a meaningful layer of security for your family.
Remember Every Member of the Family
Preparedness planning should include everyone who depends on you—including your pets.
Think about the food, water, medications, identification, carriers or leashes, sanitation supplies, and comfort items your pets might need if you had to remain at home during an emergency or leave quickly.
Including pets in your emergency plan ahead of time means fewer decisions have to be made under stressful circumstances.
Have a Family Plan
Supplies are important, but preparedness is about more than what you have stored.
Does your family know what to do during a power outage? Where would you meet if you became separated? Who would you contact outside your immediate area? Where are important documents kept? Does everyone know where emergency supplies are located?
Having these conversations before an emergency can be just as valuable as having the right equipment.
Preparedness Can Bring Peace
Being prepared doesn't mean worrying constantly about what might happen.
In fact, preparation can do the opposite.
Knowing that you've taken reasonable steps to provide for yourself and the people you love can bring a sense of calm. You may not be able to control the emergency, but you can control some of what you do beforehand.
Start where you are. Use what you have. Add what you need over time.
Preparedness isn't about having everything.
It's about being better equipped for the unexpected—and having greater peace knowing you've taken steps to care for the people who depend on you.
